Hakeem

Hakeem is a top performer at Leadership Public Schools (LPS), San Jose. He has participated in a number of activities at LPS including student government, yearbook and basketball. He wants to study medicine so he can help others.

Jonathan

Attending UC Santa Barbara

While participating in “Sojourn to the Past,” an educational trip to the South that allowed students to visit historical landmarks in the Civil Rights Movement, Jonathan realized the importance of education. Prior to the trip, he described himself as the “class clown” and would sometimes forgo his education in order to hang out with friends. After returning to his community of East Menlo Park, Jonathon began to strive to improve his community. Things that were once obstacles now served as motivation to Jonathan and he became more focused on living out his dream of going to college and being a role model to his peers and family. Jonathan is also very involved in extracurricular activities serving as the co-captain of his soccer team, playing on his basketball team, volunteering at an elementary school, and joining College Track. Jonathan wants to study business and political science.

Miriam

Attending UC Santa Cruz

Miriam admits that her life has never been easy. Yet, despite the personal and financial struggles she has faced, Miriam has never lost sight of her dream of attending college. She has taken apparent steps to help her get there including participating in College Track and BUILD. Miriam was even awarded the Lazier award for her strong entrepreneurial skills – BUILD’s highest honor. If past behavior is any indication of what’s to come in the future, expect Miriam to overcome any future challenges and obstacles that stand in her way. Miriam has worked hard in school to get the most out of her education and as a result, was admitted to UC Santa Cruz where she plans to study business and communications.

In the future, Yara hopes to found a community center where she can create workshops for parents of underserved youth to help them become better involved in their children’s education.
